Better than a helicopter. Vespula wasps are able to fly with seeds more than 1.5 times their own weight. Drawing by Quinn Burrell.

Calycanthus and Vespula. Dispersal of spicebush seeds by yellow jackets, a new and interesting ecological interaction. Research is ongoing to try to determine why they are attracted to these seeds.

Tasty but invasive? Common persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) is a potentially invasive (but also tasty) species in California. I recently documented several populations that are probably expanding.

Dead wood in manzanita. Manzanitas (genus Arctostaphylos) may resist drought by killing off xylem. This animation shows sequential cross-sections in a trunk, tracking the path of the dead wood.
